SCENES FROM AN EXECUTION

Galactia is the greatest painter in Venice. She is a sensual, arrogant, impossible genius and has been commissioned to paint a one hundred foot long canvas. It is to represent the Venetian triumph at the great sea battle of Lepanto. The Doge of Venice wants to work to celebrate the state’s greatest naval victory; Galactia wants to tell the truth. Regarded by many as Barker’s most accessible play, this is a witty, raunchy drama exploring the limits of personal and political power.

Designer: Florence Hazard
Lighting Designer: Charles Blunt
Sound Designer: Thyge Haarberg

An explicit and at times shocking portrayal of the boozy and reckless young men who join the British Army to fight a war about which they know nothing. Loosely based on Much Ado About Nothing, Williams’ play begins in South London, where our heroes enjoy a noisy night out with mates and girls. Cut to Basra, Iraq, where one of the group experiences the death of a comrade and the terror being under fire. In the final scene we return to London where the squaddies are reunited with friends and girlfriends, one of whom has a new found political awareness that forces the boys to confront difficult questions.

This musical dramatizes the true story of the harrowing trial of Jewish factory owner Leo Frank, accused of raping and murdering Mary Phagan, a young employee. Exploiting the hysteria and virulent anti-Semitism of the townspeople, the prosecutor elicits fabricated testimony from ‘witnesses’ and cries of ‘hang him!’ form the public gallery. When Frank’s sentence is commuted to imprisonment pending an appeal, several townsfolk talk of taking the law into their own hands… This musical showcases students from the Rose Bruford’s unique Actor Musician Programme, performing all musical orchestration live on stage.
